PRESIDENTIAL PETS.When President Clinton got his dog, Buddy, he joked, If you want a friend in Washington, you have got to get a dog.The joke, originally made by President Truman, shows how often presidents feel that their dog is their only friend. May be because of this, many U.S. presidents have had dogs in the White House. Some presidents have even had more unusual pets.Herbert Hoover had a dog called King Tut. In order to improve his public image, Hoover had his photo taken with the dog and circulated to the media.Fala, one of the best-loved and most famous of all First Dogs, belonged to Franklin Roosevelt. Fala was a gift to the president from his cousin. Rex, a King Charles spaniel, came to live with Ronald and Nancy Reagan when he was a year old. Reagan would often let the dog pull on his leash and drag him away from reporters before they could ask any questions.Buddy was not the first pet to live with the Clintons in the White House. He joined their other pet, Socks the cat. Socks was the first cat to live in the White House since Amy Carter’s cat, Misty Malarky Ying Yang.
